indigenous support groups in europeeuropean support groups for indigenous peoples

This section is designed to give an overview of the key non-government organisations (NGO) in Europe which have been of assistance to Australian Indigenous Peoples in the past. Many of these organisations have websites which offer useful information and links.

    Anti-Slavery International
Anti-Slavery was set up in 1839 with the specific objective of ending slavery throughout the world. By the 1890s the Society's mandate included the ill treatment of indigenous peoples, leading it in 1909 to merge with the Aborigines' Protection Society. In 1990 the Society changed its name to Anti-Slavery International, also known as Anti-Slavery. Its main areas of work currently include forced and bonded labour, the worst forms of child labour, trafficking of human beings, and traditional or 'chattel' slavery.

Nearly one hundred such representatives have attended Rio Tinto annual general meetings since 1981, facilitated by Partizans. They include people associated with (among others) ICEM, CFMEU, Friends of the Earth, Down to Earth and JATAM.

Survival InternationalSurvival International, London, United Kingdom
Survival is a worldwide organisation supporting tribal peoples through public campaigns. Today, Survival has supporters in 82 countries. It works for tribal peoples' rights in three complementary ways: campaigns, education and funding. We work closely with local indigenous organisations and focus on tribal peoples who have the most to lose, usually those most recently in contact with the outside world. Survival runs worldwide campaigns to fight for tribal peoples. Campaigns are not only directed at governments, but at companies, banks, extremist missionaries, guerrilla armies, museums, narrow minded conservationists and anyone else who violates tribal peoples' rights.

Survival now operates a regular 'e-news' service, which you can sign up for on their website.
